Web-Based Law Office Management

This article in Law Office Computing is at once timely and (for me anyway) hilarious. Let me explain: Timely, because the article talks about application service providers (ASP’s) — which deliver your everyday software and information systems over the Internet. This means that your Client data and office software is no longer safely tucked into your computer, your server, or even your IT guy’s server; it is now who-knows-where being served up to wherever you happen to be. And these applications are going to take over. Hilarious, because I was looking into web-based law office solutions 5 years ago, but for perfectly logical and boring reasons like Internet connection speeds, the ease of finding connections, data storage and security advances, the amount of data that can be stored in a single place, and the average life-span of office software, ASP’s now look like a great idea whereas 5 years ago they were no more than the fevered dreams of a would-be dot.com billionaire-lawyer-fireman-astronaut (what can I say, I had a vivid imagination). Welcome to the party, pal. Ed. Note: FYI, I use Prolaw software from Thomson-Elite as my specialized law office management software, and the MS office programs (2003 editions) for everything else. I have also used or am familiar with all current applications on the market. Member Poll Question: What office software applications do you use? Which ones are law office specific (like Prolaw) and which ones are general (like Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.)?
